Maria Venus B. Raj

I am dying to get the latest updates on the preparation of Venus Raj for Miss Universe. I am really excited about the pageant knowing that we have a strong candidate, as far as I am concerned. Hoping for Philippines' victory in this year's edition of Miss Universe. Break a leg, Venus! =)

What is Happening to Wenn Deramas?

Recalling his latest projects, I can't help but feel sorry for a director I once admired big time. I surely loved Tanging Ina but it occurs to me now that such movie was a tough act to follow. Very tough. I mean, not a single produce from the blockbuster director Wenn Deramas has ever surpassed or even equaled the cinematic achievement of Tanging Ina. This is not to say that there is a standing law for every director to exceed himself movie after movie. I am emphasizing that after Tanging Ina, movies and TV shows that he came up with were of poor quality, if not very poor. Let me state a few examples. Walang Kapalit, a teleserye that starred then ABS-CBN's most prized possessions Claudine Barretto and Piolo Pascual, ended in such a negatively strong note that it will be forgotten the minute after its last episode is shown. It was lazy and very far from being engaging. How about Maligno? Swimming into the horror sea could have been a welcome respite for Mr. Deramas but he surely made one thing after that directorial experience: he bade goodbye to the genre. Not only did the show waste the Kimerald tandem, it also showed Claudine Barretto at her acting worst. And how about Habang May Buhay, the vehicle that should have further cemented Judy Ann Santos' status as the Teleserye Queen? It was focus-starved. The producers' intention of paying tribute to one of our nation's unsung heroes – the nurses - was defeated by the standard that dictates Mr. Deramas' way of directing. I mean, does he ever have a sense of reality? Check youtube and watch the scenes before the character of Gladys Reyes died and you'll know what I am talking about.

Mula sa Puso, one of his first projects if not the first, already hinted on the excessiveness and (not OR) the limitations of Wenn Deramas as a director but that was way too engaging to let flaws be highlighted. Then came the realization that perhaps, Mr. Deramas was not born to be a TV director. He may have scored in the ratings game but it does not justify the shows' quality.

In the movies, Mr. Deramas’ works were well appreciated side by side earning a lot. As in, a lot. Thus, the contentment in the thought that he is, after all, really fit for the movies. Along came Hating Kapatid and such thought was broken into pieces drastically. The movie was a disaster. Judging from the trailer, I did not expect to watch a soon-to-be-classic movie. I entered the moviehouse to give support to Judy Ann Santos and Sarah Geronimo, two persons among a few in showbiz that I admire for their character. The movie was poorly written, poorly edited and poorly lighted. The musical score was not engaging and was even absent from time to time. The inclusion, or If I may say shameless highlighting, of products Ms. Geronimo endorses was a sharp manifestation of the filmmaker's disrespect for his audience. I was in total disappointment the whole time I was watching, save for the solid performance of Ms. Judy Ann Santos, who thankfully has given credibility to the convoluted movie, albeit not quite enough to save it. The movie was such a waste of talent, money and time.

I do not discount the fact that Mr. Deramas has had a lot of contributions to the Philippine film industry what with his huge blockbuster movies that brought food to the tables of up to the smallest crew members in his movies. I am here to emphasize that his audience deserves the best things from him having been given the opportunity to create a difference among people in a wide scale. It doesn’t help that he exhibited disrespect to the movie-going public in his latest outing.

If Tanging Ina was any indication, Wenn Deramas surely knows how to make a real good movie. He just has to come to terms with something he truly needs to do well again – Focus. Peace!

Baptism of Fire

I love my blog's name. It came out of nowhere and I am so loving it. For the rest of forever, I will share my semi-crazy life to the world. I still don't know what to expect from this experience. I have something beautiful in mind, though. That is, through this blog, I'll get the chance to smile and cry (i cry oh so easily) many years from now at my documentation of the happenings in my life at present. That said, I now indulge you World. Welcome me! And, to set a humble tone for this momentous first, let me state the obvious - I am Bridgebalm!

Again, World, welcome me! =)
